In football, being offside means you're out of position: a step ahead of the play, outside the rules of the game. For Uyi Omorogbe and Gabriel Ruja, that idea became a way of seeing the world, and eventually the name of a brand.
Two outsiders who found themselves through the game
Uyi and Gabriel met as teenagers at Shattuck-St. Mary's, a residential soccer academy in Minnesota. Uyi grew up in upstate New York; Gabriel came from El Paso, Texas. Both were first-generation Americans, and both knew what it felt like to exist between cultures. Soccer gave them structure, a common language and room to define themselves on their own terms.
Years later, that shared experience became the foundation of Ophsides: a New York brand for people who never quite fit the mold, and who move, think and create differently because of it.
Where soccer culture meets New York streetwear
American soccer culture is bigger and more creative than it often gets credit for. There's a whole community of designers, artists and players with deep ties to the game who rarely see it reflected in fashion. Ophsides is built for them. Rather than squeezing football into fashion's existing formulas, the brand builds its own world where sport, style and art overlap.
The design language pulls from the football jerseys, training kits and terrace style of the '90s, then reworks it for everyday life in the city:
